The #metoo campaign of Hollywood has proved to be a contagious one for India. With the surprising confessions of sexual misconduct by popular celebrities, coming out in the open, there seems to be a wave of confessions all across the globe. The misconduct that people faced in the past is turning out to be the talk of the town since a while.
This frenzy has reached in India and the blunt allegations have taken the Hindi film industry and media by shock. Some bold female celebrities decided to come out of their shell and share their traumatic experience. While they got patted on their backs, the accused men are being openly abashed in the public for the things that they are yet to be proved guilty of. Moreover the definition of harassment is to be clarified, so that the public can know what can be termed as misconduct and what as a genuine approach. Though we can assume that there are a lot of genuine cases amongst these, but there are also cases, whose motive is to grab public attention or to just create havoc in someone’s personal life. In addition to this, the media trials that are taking place on the television screens must be put an end to. This is needed because of the sensitivity of the cases, wherein we must allow the concerned agencies and systems to act and hold on our personal biases and opinions.
While it won’t be wrong to say that this campaign was meant to empower women, but it has failed to remain uncorrupted. The culprits are being openly denounced in public even without any intentions of filling an actual legal FIR. Agreed, that there can be many genuine allegations amongst these, which came in light with the help of this campaign, but we have to understand that any allegation is just an allegation until it is proved in the court. In the midst of all this, the ministry of women and child development has asked for all the allegations to be legally verified, so as to ensure fair justice to all the parties involved. Being responsible mature citizens, we should try to understand the gravity and dynamics of the situations and not react in a hurry; instead we should openly look at these accusations as mere accusations, without preconceived and biased notions and leave the decisions in the hands of our respected judiciary.
